Foundations of digital literacy

For many seniors and complete beginners, the biggest barrier to using a smartphone, tablet or computer is not the technology itself but the fear of pressing the wrong button. This 90-minute foundations course removes that fear by starting exactly where each participant is, with real devices and real everyday tasks: sending a message, making a video call to a grandchild, checking a bus timetable, or filling in an online form. There is no assumed prior knowledge and no jargon: every term is explained in plain language, and mistakes are treated as a normal part of learning rather than something to avoid. Participants practise step by step, at their own pace, with an educator moving around the room to help individually rather than lecturing from the front. By the end of the session, most participants leave able to complete tasks independently that felt impossible beforehand, along with the confidence to keep exploring on their own. The course is popular with libraries, senior citizens’ associations and community centres looking to offer a welcoming first step into digital life for their members.
